Hi friends, I hesitated before sending today’s letter, unsure if we can truly afford to be frivolous and pause, but I do believe it is essential to care and hold compassion for ourselves and if that means to mute thoughts for a bit and breathe and do something out of the ordinary, so be it. This space exists as a reminder for everyone to take deep care of themselves —and that includes anything that makes you feel good and relaxed, not just this week’s suggestion. So find your moment of zen within this chaotic world and press pause!
This week I bring you Radio Garden, an Amsterdam-based internet radio that connects you to live radio stations across the world. Radio Garden began as an exhibition project commissioned by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in 2016 and it has since become an independent company with a highly popular mobile app under its belt.
I used to spend hours listening to random radio stations when Radio Garden was first launched, but eventually forgot about it over time. I’ve been listening again to Radio Garden for a few months now. How immensely soothing it is to listen to a radio station based somewhere far away, it’s like I’m not even here.
Thus far, I’ve extensively explored Chilean radios, with particular attention devoted to those scattered around the Chiloé Archipelago and the broader Los Lagos region. It’s also a fun way to learn about the geography of a country.
Most recently, I’ve moved to New Zealand. I love that many radios based on the South Island play an interesting mix of old school rock music. What if I were in Ashburton —a large town south-west of Christchurch —and were listening to Rock the Casbah at 1am on a Sunday night?
